Fresh tips
Garlic
These two handsome knobs were grown by this writer. He has planted his 2009 crop.
Jon speaks: All year round I eat local garlic, even in the off season. I break the knobs into their parts, leave the skin on, and freeze. It freezes well and when cooking I remove a couple of cloves from the freezer, skin, and pop direct into the pot, or pan.
This time of the year, down under, buy late ripening apples, oranges and mandarins, but not from the state next door, or from another country, buy them from the grower closest to you.
When times get tough, and they’re getting that way, it’s time to grow
your own. Or buy it from the folk down the road. And of all the vegies
you could chose to plant, nothing sprouts easier, or is easier to
nurture, than this member of the allium genus.
If you’re up for it, then start preparing your plot.
There’s no hurry, we’ve got plenty of time.
But start now and be ready when you need to be.
